South Georgia Medical Group Management Association was started in 1999 with a handful of office managers and administrators who met informally often over lunch. The lunches provided an open forum to discuss the daily challenges of managing a medical practice and share ideas on best practice methods.
As more and more managers became aware of the monthly lunches, educational programs were added to address the rapidly changing healthcare environment that managed care and new government regulations brought to the table. Over the years the group has grown from 7 or 8 managers meeting in the back room of a local restaurant to over 50 today.
SGMGMA has provided education, support and feedback on tough topics such as creating and implementing HIPAA policies, IPOs, contract negotiations, preparing for Y2K, and more recently, the Affordable Care Act and understanding Meaningful Use requirements. Just as those early founders of the organization knew, the healthcare industry continues to change, and we continue to draw upon the knowledge from others in our field through professional speakers who educate the group and foster a supportive network of colleagues.
